English Homework Policy
At Sandhurst School, we believe that homework plays an important role in consolidating learning, developing independent study skills, and fostering a sense of responsibility among our students. This policy outlines our approach to homework, with a specific focus on the use of SPARX Reader as a homework resource for Years 7-10. Year 11 will receive bespoke homework best-suited to the topic of study.
Purpose of homework:
- Reading and Comprehension Skills: Reading develops vocabulary, spelling and a familiarity with a variety of language and structural features.
- Develop Cultural Capital: Cultural Capital is developed through an exposure to a variety of diverse texts. Students learn about the wider world and become thoughtful, empathetic citizens
- Independent Study Skills: Homework helps students develop independent study skills, time management, and organizational skills.
- Responsibility: Homework encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning and academic progress.
- Parental Engagement: Homework provides parents with an insight into their child's learning progress and allows them to support their child's education.
- Reinforce Learning: Homework provides an opportunity for students to reinforce the concepts and skills learned in class
Types of homework:
- SPARX Reader: SPARX Reader is an online reading platform that offers a wide range of age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction texts. Students will be assigned weekly reading tasks on SPARX Reader, which they are expected to complete.
- Subject-Specific Tasks: Year 11 teachers will assign specific tasks related to their topics. These tasks may include research, revision exercises, or project work.
Guidelines for homework:
- Frequency and Duration: Homework is set weekly
- Deadlines: These will be at 8am on the morning homework is due unless otherwise instructed
- Support and Resources: Students are to seek additional support and resources from their teacher if necessary.
- Parental Engagement: Parents are to ensure homework is completed according to the expected standard. Parents are responsible for making the school aware of any reasons for homework lateness or non-completion.
Monitoring and feedback:
- Teachers will review and provide feedback on homework assignments to support students' learning progress.
- Students are encouraged to reflect on the feedback provided and make necessary improvements in their future work.
- Homework completion and quality will be reflected termly on the student’s report.
Review and evaluation:
This homework policy will be reviewed annually by the English Department to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with the school's educational goals.
By implementing this homework policy, we aim to create a supportive and engaging learning environment that promotes academic growth and personal development among our Year 7-10 students.
- Year 7-8: Students should expect to spend approximately 30-45 minutes on their SPARX homework
- Year 9-10: Students should expect to spend approximately 45-60 minutes on their SPARX homework
- Year 11: Students should expect to spend approximately 45-60 minutes on their task. This does not include any time spent on independent revision.
- Homework should be submitted on time, as specified by the subject teacher.
- Non - submission will incur a sanction as per the school policy.
- Students are encouraged to seek clarification or assistance from their subject teachers if they encounter difficulties with their homework.
- The school library and online resources are available to support students in completing their homework.
- Parents are encouraged to support their child's completion of homework by providing a quiet and suitable study environment at home.
- Parents should check their child's homework regularly and communicate with teachers if they have any concerns or questions.
