At Sandhurst, we have set up a tutor reading programme to develop the reading culture within our school community and encourage reading for pleasure. We want to give all our students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of language and the craft of writing. The programme is designed to ensure all students have access to high quality texts and experience a range of authors, genres and styles that they may not normally encounter within their own personal reading.
Every tutor group in years 7 and 8 has been allocated a set text of short stories and tutors will read this text aloud while students follow in their own book twice a week during tutor time. Tutors will model fluent and expressive reading focusing on pace, pause, intonation and expression. Each reading session will last around 15 minutes. They will identify and highlight difficult language to close the vocabulary gap and expose our students to high level words (vocabulary not normally encountered in everyday speech). Once a tutor group has finished a story, they will complete a range of activities designed to help them explore the content before being allocated a new story.
Should you wish to discuss the the stories with your child, the books we are starting with are:
Year 7
Year 8
Year 7 are reading Iridescent Adolescent which offers a wide and exciting range of short stories that challenge and engage students. The stories which made it into Iridescent Adolescent represent diverse voices from authors such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Margaret Atwood and Jamil Jan Kochai.
Year 8 are reading from Literary Shorts: Pupil Anthology covering English literary heritage, seminal world literature and contemporary writers such as Rudyard Kipling, Katherine Mansfield and Roald Dahl.
We look forward to enjoying reading together,
